The Tilt Sensor for myRIO by Darin Kinion uses the built-in accelerometers of myRIO to re-create an old-fashioned bubble level. By using the myRIO wireless or USB connectivity, you can monitor the current tilt on a host computer and display it in an XY graph, for example, to achieve precise leveling.

A host computer is not required, though; PWM is used to individually control the brightness of the four onboard LEDs in a display that mimics an old bubble. The LEDs dim and brighten as the tilt changes. When the middle two (LED1 and LED2) are evenly lit and the outer two (LED0 and LED3) are off, the unit is level along the chosen axis. This app is educational and the provided FPGA code is simple. The accelerometer and PWM capabilities offer an approachable introduction to the sometimes complex world of FPGA coding.
