The NI cDAQ-9172 is the legacy NI CompactDAQ chassis. Two upgrade chassis, the NI cDAQ-9174 and cDAQ-9178, offer a superset of features to the legacy cDAQ-9172. The new features include built-in BNC trigger lines (cDAQ-9178 only), the ability to run analog input modules at different rates within the same chassis, four general-purpose counters, and upgraded power and USB connections. NI recommends using the new chassis for new systems as well as for duplicating test systems built on the original NI CompactDAQ chassis.

The cDAQ-9172 is an eight-slot NI CompactDAQ chassis that can hold up to eight C Series I/O modules. This USB 2.0-compliant chassis operates on 11 to 30 VDC and includes an AC/DC power converter and a 1.8 m USB cable. The cDAQ-9172 has two 32-bit counter/timer chips built into the chassis. With a correlated digital I/O module installed in slot 5 or 6 of the chassis, you can access all the functionality of the counter/timer chip including event counting, pulse-wave generation or measurement, and quadrature encoders.
