The Challenge:
Developing a multiphase flowmeter system to indicate the rate of flow of fluid.

The Solution:
Using LabVIEW, Single-Board RIO, the LabVIEW Real-Time Module, and the LabVIEW FPGA Module to develop flowmeters that can process data, calculate performance results, log data, and generate reports.

Measuring the flow of liquids is a critical need in many industrial plants. In some operations, the ability to conduct accurate flow measurements is so important that it can make the difference between making a profit or taking a loss. In other cases, inaccurate flow measurements or failure to take measurements can cause serious results.

A multiphase flowmeter can measure the individual phase flow rates of constituent phases in a given flow such as petroleum, water, and gas mixtures produced during oil production processes.

The principle of operation is based on a vibration, temperature, and pressure analysis. We designed the system based on the Single-Board RIO platform. It consists of a Single-Board RIO embedded real-time controller and a Single-Board RIO mezzanine card for 2-slot C Series modules.

Design Phase

The software is developed by Ovak Technologies upon technical specification of Petroleum Technology company. We based the solution on the Single-Board RIO platform and programmed the solution using LabVIEW software, the LabVIEW Real-Time Module, and the LabVIEW FPGA Module.

We used LabVIEW to program the FPGA because it makes it easier to design complex programs that can be executed swiftly.

We designed the system to measure the individual fluid flow rates of oil and gas when more than one type of fluid is flowing through a pipeline. The flowmeter provides accurate readings even when different flow regimes are present.

For each Multiphase Flowmeter channel, vibration and environmental parameters (pressure and temperature) are measured.

LabVIEW is easy to use and makes it faster to develop a complicated application with a user-friendly GUI. A web-published GUI is available for system setup and monitoring.

Fast Deployment With NI Single-Board RIO

We built our system around the Single-Board RIO platform to meet our high performance requirements. We chose the Single-Board RIO embedded control and acquisition device because it contains a real-time processor and an FPGA with 96 analog I/O lines (DIO 0 V to 3 V).

Creating our final deployed solution was simple because we could reuse our LabVIEW prototyping code without any major coding changes.

The flowmeters perform data processing and save the following calculated results in the controller’s registers:

  • Flow rate gas
  • Flow rate gas standard
  • Flow rate water
  • Flow rate liquid

The flowmeter supports the Enron Modbus communication protocol and interacts with supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA).

We used LabVIEW and the GEMstudio graphical programming environment to program the Amulet 4.3” display and created a solution in which the users, by means of the LabVIEW API, can plug the Amulet display into the Single-Board RIO system to view or control the system’s operation.

LabVIEW Graphical System Design Approach Benefits

Compared to traditional controls, we find LabVIEW faster, more versatile, and easier to program with. We are satisfied with what we achieved in such a short period of time using LabVIEW.

A graphical system design approach helped us create a user-intuitive interface that makes it easy for even a new user to start the program. This approach also significantly reduced program development time.
